This walkthrough covers TVs and boxes running Android TV. If your device shows the newer Google TV interface, the steps are similar but some menus differ — see how to set up IPTV on Google TV. Start by checking that your device qualifies.

You'll need: your Android TV device online, the remote, some free storage, and your access details (M3U URL or Xtream Codes login).

Before you start: check your device

Android TV is Google's operating system for televisions and set-top boxes. Google TV is a newer interface built on top of it, with the same app ecosystem, so almost everything here applies to both.

Devices that count as Android TV:

  • Smart TVs from several manufacturers that ship with Android TV
  • Streaming boxes and sticks certified for Android TV
  • Some operator-supplied boxes that run Android TV

To check, look for Google Play on the home screen and an "Android TV" or "Google TV" reference under Settings → Device Preferences → About (menu names can vary slightly by manufacturer).

Be cautious with uncertified "Android boxes." Some run phone versions of Android with custom launchers, which may lack proper remote support or security updates.

Compatibility checklist:

  • My device shows Google Play and runs Android TV or Google TV
  • I've found a TV-friendly player in Google Play
  • I'm using Ethernet or strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi
  • My device has free storage and is up to date

Step 1: Update the device and Google Play apps

  1. Open Settings → Device Preferences → About → System update and install any update. (Menu names can vary by manufacturer.)
  2. Open Google Play → your profile → Manage apps & games and update installed apps.

Step 2: Connect by Ethernet if you can

Many Android TV TVs and boxes have an Ethernet port. A wired connection gives the most consistent playback. Otherwise, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi close to the router.

Step 3: Install an IPTV player from Google Play

  1. Open Google Play on the TV.
  2. Search for an IPTV player that supports your access method and is designed for TV.
  3. Select Install, then Open.

Installing from Google Play is the safest route and keeps the app updated automatically. If you must install from another source, Android TV lets you allow one trusted app, such as a file manager, to install other apps — typically under Settings → Device Preferences → Security & restrictions (or Apps → Security & restrictions). Only do this for apps from developers you trust, and read how to install IPTV apps first.

Step 4: Add your subscription

In the player, find Add playlist, Add account or Login:

Tip: many TV players let you enter details from a phone browser by scanning a QR code or visiting a short link shown on screen.

Step 5: Configure the program guide

Xtream Codes setups often load the guide automatically. For M3U, enter your EPG URL in the player's EPG or guide settings and trigger an update. See setting up the program guide.

Step 6: Check playback settings

Most players have a video decoder setting:

  • Hardware decoding is usually smoother and more efficient — start here.
  • If you see a black screen, stutter or no audio, try software decoding for comparison.

Other useful settings include buffer size and stream format (HLS or MPEG-TS). See how to configure an IPTV player.

Step 7: Organise and test

  1. Play channels from several groups to confirm everything works.
  2. Hide groups you don't need and add favourites: organizing channels and favorites.
  3. Add the player to your home screen favourites row for quick access.

Performance and remote tips

  • Processor and memory: budget TVs can be slow with large playlists. A dedicated streaming box often performs better than a TV's built-in system.
  • Codec support: newer formats such as HEVC need compatible hardware.
  • Storage: clear the player cache if the device slows down.
  • TV-friendly player: choose one designed for TV, with large tiles and D-pad navigation.
  • Typing with a remote: an Xtream Codes login is much shorter to enter than a long playlist URL.

This guide is for general information. Third-party apps and device menus change over time; if something looks different on your device, check the app or manufacturer's own documentation. Brand names belong to their respective owners.
