This guide takes you from a fresh Fire TV Stick to watching your first channel. Start by confirming that your model supports the player you want to use.

You'll need: your Fire TV device connected to the TV and internet, its remote, some free storage, and your subscription's access details (M3U URL or Xtream Codes login — see the access-method comparison).

Before you start: check your Fire TV

Fire TV devices fall into two groups that behave differently:

GroupExamplesApp options
Fire OS (Android-based)Most Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Stick 4K / 4K Max, Fire TV Cube, many Fire TV smart TVsAmazon Appstore, plus trusted apps from other sources once enabled
Vega OS (newer, Linux-based)Some newer Fire TV modelsAmazon Appstore apps only; Android apps can't be sideloaded

Most Fire TV devices in homes today run Fire OS. To check yours, go to Settings → My Fire TV → About and look at the software information. On Vega OS you'll need a player that's available directly in the Amazon Appstore, so Route B in Step 3 doesn't apply.

Compatibility checklist:

  • My Fire TV runs Fire OS, or my chosen player is in the Amazon Appstore
  • I know whether my subscription uses M3U or Xtream Codes
  • I have at least a few hundred MB of free storage
  • My Wi-Fi is strong where the TV is, or I'm using an Ethernet adapter

Step 1: Update your Fire TV

  1. From the home screen, open Settings (the gear icon).
  2. Go to My Fire TV → About.
  3. Select Check for Updates and install any update.
  4. Let the device restart if prompted.

Updating first avoids compatibility problems with newer apps.

Step 2: Free up some space

Go to Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications and uninstall apps you don't use. Players and their caches need room to work smoothly.

Step 3: Install a player

  1. From the home screen, select Find (the magnifying glass) or use voice search.
  2. Search for an IPTV player that supports your access method.
  3. Select it and choose Get or Download.
  4. Open the app once it's installed.

Route B — from a trusted source (Fire OS devices only)

Only use this route if your chosen player isn't in the Appstore and you trust its developer.

  1. Install a file-downloader app from the Amazon Appstore.
  2. Enable Developer Options if they're hidden: Settings → My Fire TV → About, then select your device name several times.
  3. Go to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install unknown apps and turn it on only for the downloader app.
  4. Use the downloader to fetch the player from its official website, then install it.
  5. Afterwards, consider turning the setting back off.

Avoid modified apps or "pre-loaded" packages. See how to install IPTV apps for safety tips.

IPTV Apollo customers can install APOLLO IPTV PLAYER this way with Downloader code 8278550 — see the APOLLO IPTV PLAYER download and Fire TV installation guide.

Step 4: Enter your subscription details

Open the player and look for an option such as Add playlist, Add user or Login.

Tip: typing long URLs with the remote is tedious. Many players let you enter details from your phone, or you can use the Fire TV mobile app's keyboard.

Step 5: Load the program guide

With Xtream Codes, the guide usually loads automatically. With M3U, add your EPG URL in the player's settings and run an update. Full instructions: our EPG setup guide.

Step 6: Tidy up and test

  1. Open a few channels from different groups to confirm playback.
  2. Add your most-watched channels to favourites: organizing channels and favorites.
  3. Move the player to the front of your apps row: highlight it, press the menu (☰) button and choose Move to front.

Keep it running smoothly

  • Restart occasionally: Settings → My Fire TV → Restart.
  • Check for updates every so often, as in Step 1.
  • Clear the player's cache if the device gets sluggish, and uninstall apps you no longer use.
  • Large playlists can be slow to load on entry-level sticks. Players that let you hide unused groups help.
  • Wi-Fi: use 5 GHz if your router supports it, and the HDMI extender that comes with many sticks to improve reception. An Ethernet adapter made for Fire TV gives the most consistent playback. See Wi-Fi connection problems.

If something goes wrong

IPTV Apollo customers receive their access details from our team after activation and can contact support if they get stuck. Using another device? See the compatible devices overview.

Frequently asked questions

Developer Options is missing on my Fire TV. What do I do?

On many recent models it's hidden. Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About and select your device name several times until a message says you're a developer. Developer Options then appears under My Fire TV.

Can I install my player without enabling unknown sources?

Yes — if the player is available in the Amazon Appstore, install it from there. You only need the unknown-sources setting for trusted apps that aren't in the Appstore, and only on Fire OS (Android-based) devices.
